About South Central

South Central Elementary is located in Washington County, just off Interstate 79 in the heart of Canonsburg, PA.  Although it is one of the largest elementary buildings in the Canon-McMillan School District, our school offers the charm of a closely-knit neighborhood learning center.

Everyday 450 smiling faces walk through the front doors into our beautifully remodeled building to receive a state of the art educational experience.  Currently, Canon-McMillan is the ONLY “Code to the Future” district in PA (as well as OH and WV) which means our elementary students are integrating STEAM daily into our classroom lessons. Our young computer programmers are leaning to code with 3 "Epic Build Showcases" throughout the year to demonstrate their “Code to the Future” programs to special guests.

Using iPads, SMART Boards, and Chromebooks in every room, our highly skilled teachers in grades K-4 are able to integrate technology into daily lessons and are encouraged to hone their own skills though on-going district initiatives.  South Central teachers mix the use of innovative tools with old fashion teaching to deliver a competitive curriculum at each child’s own level.

To meet the needs of our diverse learners we offer the assistance of two special education teachers, two autistic support teachers, and many para-educators in an inclusion setting where learning is differentiated. Additional support is provided through Title I and Reading Recovery programs. A comprehensive guidance curriculum, school nurse, specialized therapists, and English Learners services are also available. For those young learners who qualify - an Extended Day Kindergarten program is offered. Additionally, the SCOPE program is available for those children identified as Gifted.

South Central’s strength comes from our family support. We have a very involved Parent Teacher Association that is the backbone of our learning initiatives. The PTA sponsors educational programs for the students, plans Halloween and winter room parties, funds our field trips and fitness day.
