On December 17, 2019, Western Area Career & Technology Center hosted the SkillsUSA District 9 Competition and approximately 190 student participants representing school districts throughout Southwestern PA.

SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving high school, college and middle school students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations and/or further education through a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.

Students spend many hours preparing for the SkillsUSA competitions and are chosen by their instructors based on grades, attendance, and performance in their specific areas of study.  In addition, some of the programs host an in-class competition to decide who will go on to compete.  Being chosen is a great accomplishment for the students and helps build a foundation to ready themselves for performance in their individual industry success.

First-place winners of this competition will advance to the PA SkillsUSA State Competition and Leadership Conference held in Hershey, PA, in April 2020.  Of the 21 Western Area CTC students who placed in the competitions, ten were first-place winners.
