The Canon-McMillan School District Administration and Teachers’ Association have been working together to identify the safest approach to reopening schools for the 2020-2021 school year. Given this ever-changing situation, it is important that there is a plan that adheres to the latest state and federal guidelines. Input from over 3000 parent and staff surveys, school directors, administrators and teachers, has made it clear that options for in-school and remote learning meets the community’s needs.
The district has experienced a substantial number of staffing issues, due to a variety of reasons with some being COVID-based concerns. CMSD cannot discuss personnel matters in any detail, but the staffing issues directly impacted the ability to provide transportation services to some of the students. As a matter of fact, last week, the district was prepared to share with the community the worst case scenario - opening school on August 27th, fully remote. However, employees from other departments that include maintenance, custodians, paraeducators and administration stepped up and they will be driving vans and providing monitoring services during transport. On a temporary basis, the following administrators will be driving students to school in vans: Superintendent Michael Daniels, Assistant Superintendent Scott Chambers, Director of Business & Finance Joni Mansmann, Director of Special Education Becky Lieb, Special Education Coordinator Robert Chuey, and Director of Transportation Matthew Harding.
Superintendent Daniels shared that unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures and we will do what we have to do to see to it that our students get access to the education they deserve.
The district realizes that the new hybrid model of education may not be ideal for all families in the district, but it wants the community to understand that it is always looking out for the best interest and safety of the students.

The district is still accepting applications for van drivers and monitors and actively hiring for other positions as well!
