Ryan Angott had himself one heck of a Friday night last week.
The Canon-McMillan running back ran for 261 yards and five touchdowns on 22 carries in his team’s 45-14 win over Hempfield.
And that performance also earned him the top spot in PennLive’s fan vote for Pa. high school football player of the week. Angott picked up 9,352 of the 29,433 votes logged.
“It’s an honor to be recognized,” he said. “But I had help from my line to get me those stats.”
Spoken like a true team player. That said, Angott was pretty special on his way to that line, and he also did his part with trying to earn this honor. He said he was able to campaign a little, retweeting the poll for the award, and “reaching out to family and friend who reached out to family and friends.”
That helped him top Aliquippa’s Vernon Redd, who ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns in a 50-7 win over Beaver. Redd finished with 7,205 votes. Yough’s CJ Waldier (2,854 votes), Penn-Trafford’s Cade Yacamelli (2,296) and Rochester’s Rashawn Reid (1,886) rounded out the top five.
Coaches, scorekeepers and fans who would like to get an athlete on PennLive’s top performers lists for Friday and Saturday are encouraged to tag Brian Linder on Twitter @SportsByBLinder with the players' name and stats postgame. They can also email email@example.com.
The Player of the Week poll will run each week from Tuesday morning until 11:59 a.m. on Thursday, and the winner of the fan vote will be featured on PennLive.
