Did you know that October was Thank A Principal month?

Canon-McMillan School District thought it would be a great idea to give the community brief backgrounds on who the principals are at each building. Principals do so much for their schools and deserve to be acknowledged for all of their hard work! They’re all very passionate about education and many of them have been with Canon-McMillan School District starting at different roles, in different buildings, for many years. Even though October is Thank a Principal month, you can thank your principals any time of year!

This week's featured principals are your principals at your Intermediate Schools. Learn more about them below!

 

Dr. Mark Abbondanza

Dr. Mark Abbondanza

Principal

North Strabane Intermediate School

Dr. Mark Abbondanza is principal of North Strabane Intermediate School.  He has worked in the Canon-McMillan School District as an administrator for the past 16 years. He has served as the principal of NSIS for the past 12 years.  Prior to his current administrative position, he served as an assistant principal for three years at Canon-McMillan High School and principal of Canonsburg Middle School for one year.

In addition to serving as a principal, Dr. Abbondanza has been an adjunct professor since 2015 at California University of Pennsylvania. He teaches in the Administrative and Leadership Program in the Secondary Education Department. He also teaches education classes in the undergraduate program in the Secondary Education Department.

Dr. Abbondanza earned a Bachelor of Science degree from California University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Education degree in from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Philosophy of Education Doctorate from Robert Morris University.

To contribute to the field of education, Dr. Abbondanza has published several articles in the Pennsylvania Administrator Journal. He has written on topics such as technology integration in the classroom, collaborative learning, coding with Drones, and digital literacy. He is most proud of his article, Powering Students Up, which was published in the Principal Leadership Journal, National Association of Secondary School Principals.

In 2017, Dr. Abbondanza was awarded the Frank S. Manchester Excellence in Journalism Award by the Pennsylvania Principals Association.  Since 2019, he has served as one of nine members on the Pennsylvania Principals Association Editorial Review Board. 

During the fall of 2019, he was invited to present at the Pennsylvania Principals Conference on the topic of using Drones with intermediate level students to teach them about coding as an avenue to develop essential soft skills like communication, teamwork, collaboration, and perseverance.

Dr. Abbondanza takes great pride in working with the teachers, staff, and students at North Strabane Intermediate School. He is dedicated to building strong relationships and collaborating with teachers to create a positive school culture for students.


Mr. Bob Kleinhans

Principal

Cecil Intermediate School

Mr. Bob Kleinhans received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Indiana University of PA and his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Kleinhans has been with CM for 26 years. He’s taught the following grades at the following CM schools: third grade for six years at Cecil Elementary, sixth and seventh grade math for one year at Cecil Middle School, and fifth grade for one year at Wylandville.

He has also been the Principal for nine years at Cecil Elementary, Muse Elementary, and First Street Elementary. He is currently the principal at Cecil Intermediate School and has been for the past 9 years.
